About us

Boutique Investment Partners (BIP) is an independent investment management and consulting firm that specialises in the provision of globally focused multi-manager investment management and consulting services to leading South African independent financial advisors, and their retail and institutional clients. BIP manages and consults on assets in excess of R35 billion, making it one of the most significant participants in the retail multi-manager arena in South Africa.

Boutique Investment Partners was formed in 2014 as a subsidiary of the Efficient Group. The core team of investment professionals representing BIP has previously worked together for many years at a major South African insurance based financial services group. The opportunity to establish BIP presented the team with the entrepreneurial environment to create a business focused solely on the investment interests, and wealth creation and preservation needs of clients. The BIP team comprises a strong and dedicated group of individuals with exceptionally strong investment skills and experience. Collectively the team has on average in excess of ten years of investment consulting and multi-manager investment management experience. The most senior team members have been involved in multi-manager investment management since the inception of the multi-manager industry in South Africa in the late 1990’s. The team boasts two actuaries and a number of CFA charter holders and candidates.

The investment team, and indeed the entire BIP business, have been structured and organised in a way that reflects our belief that exceptional service to our clients and the attainment of their long term investment objectives are the core of our business existence. Our investment capabilities are reflected in our suite of house view funds that exploit the global landscape of investment opportunities open to investors. We aspire to be a leading provider of global multi-asset investment solutions. This is to be achieved by leveraging off their five core competitive advantages:

  • A well defined, globally competitive, robust and repeatable investment idea generation process.
  • An intellectually-grounded, fundamental valuations-driven active asset allocation process.
  • An innovative and dynamic portfolio construction process.
  • A prudently informed manager selection process.
  • A rational and therefore non-emotional manager de-selection process.
  • A robust portfolio risk management process.

We currently manage assets on behalf of almost 50 clients, predominantly large South African based independent financial advisory businesses. Most of our client portfolios have performance track records of between 5 and 8 years and the average client account size is approximately R 500 million.

The BIP team manages and consults on client investments administered in Collective Investment Schemes (unit trusts), wrap funds on various Linked Investment Service Provider platforms and Employee Benefit platforms.

Our comprehensive service offering comprises:

  • Investment consulting
  • Investment management (both locally and globally focused)
  • Chairing of and participation on client investment committees
  • Investor reporting
  • Ad-hoc client support

Our service providers

Boutique Investment Partners cooperates closely with its sister company, Boutique Collective Investments (BCI), which is a leading provider of third party and co-named collective investment schemes (unit trusts). BCI provides BIP with the licensing and administration platform to manage client investments in unit trusts.

Our portfolio and investor administration is outsourced to some of the largest administration providers in the country, such as Silica and Maitland.

As a truly independent investment manager BIP manages model portfolios on a number of linked investment service provider (LISP) platforms, the most prominent being Allan Gray, Momentum Wealth, Investec IMS, Sanlam’s Glacier platform, ABSA’s AIMS and Old Mutual Wealth.

To further enhance and compliment the significant internal proprietary investment research conducted by BIP we also contract with a leading global Investment research organisation – the Bank Credit Analyst (BCA) for independent global investment research inputs. Domestically we have access arrangements with Prudential.

We utilise the full suite of investment data providers available to the South African industry – Morningstar, INET Bridge, MoneyMate and Bloomberg.

Powerful global best-of-breed investment research software provided by Morningstar Direct forms the backbone of BIP’s quantitative research process.

We believe that the abovementioned administration and business partnership arrangements combined with the access to leading research, data and analysis partnerships and tools give BIP a compelling competitive advantage, to the benefit of its clients.
